Promises.

Admit it- how many of us would willingly pick up the newspapers and read its entire content front to back? Headlines to byline to the full article itself? Hmmm? (The New Paper does not count kids.) From what I gather, not a lot of our youths know a lot about the goings on in the world today (okay so I'm basing this on my sister who hardly reads anything but the tabloids and Cleo magazine). They would rather spend time hanging out, drinking coffee, watching movies, clubbing, having sexual encounters... (I am not saying that these activities are wrong, but...)
I am not saying that I am a saint. (I mean, I pick what I want to read and just skim the rest of the newspapers... sometimes the news can be too depressing, too intense.) But it's good to read up on the news and catch up on the latest happenings, besides Hollywood gossip (speaking of which, very nice names Angelina gave to her twins, don't you think? Ahem.)
This made me wonder- are all of us just self-centered beings? Born into this world to predominantly be occupied with our entire existent that we hardly take notice, take comfort, take fact in our daily surroundings? Is that the reason why people oppose the idea of organ trading here? Is that the reason why people are willing to implicate others on acts that they think/know that they will not be able to shoulder themselves? That lawsuits and accusations and slander are the norm?
What about the environment? Greenhouse effects? Carbon emissions? Don't people care about all these anymore? Why is the world more caught up with Obama versus McCain and the Anwar Ibrahim sodomy saga and the effects the new ERP gantries have on businesses and motorists and inflation and rising fuel prices, et cetera et cetera? All of these are problems that can be solved and perhaps even avoided in the short term. Politics, economy, drama... nothing compares to the damages we are inflicting on our planet. And these damages, they can't just be done away with in the short term.
It's just scary to think about what's happening in our world, environmentally wise. And the efforts that have been taken up to ease the burden- is it a classic case of being too little, too late? What would really happen should we all die tomorrow because of what we have done to our planet? Afterlife is not looking so hot right now. And believe me, the longer it takes for everyone to co-operate and save the earth, the earlier the demise of our planet. I didn't really think that concert thingy that was held last year - I forgot what its name was, dammit - has done much to educate homosapiens on how to save the earth. Moreover, the concert itself used up a lot more energy and did far more damage than good.
So what can we do to help? Well there are a lot of things that we can do, and it really is not too late to learn from the mistakes of our forefathers. Simple, little things can do so much and plus, with the recent G-8 summit promising a decrease of carbon emission from the major players by as much as 50% by the year 2050, perhaps there is hope for us after all. Perhaps there is hope that we will all live to breathe in fresher air, and see a more greener Earth. It's never too late to do our part and hope.
And yes, it's never too late to catch up on the news too. Even if it can be depressing, demoralising, scary, intense. You're doing some good too- it's for your brain and general knowledge.
